Lars Schneider lives in the heart of Romsdalen, a valley in the heart of Norway that feels like a world of its own. Surrounded by jagged peaks and cascading waterfalls, life here is shaped by the mountains and the rhythms of nature.

For Lars Schneider, a photographer and storyteller, the move from the flat plains of Germany to Norway’s wild Romsdalen was a leap into a completely new way of life. Drawn by the valley’s rugged beauty and towering peaks, Lars and his family found a place that felt like home—a land where nature shapes every moment.
Romsdalen has become a playground for some of the world’s best cardio athletes and outdoor enthusiasts, who are lured by its endless trails, epic climbs, and raw, untamed landscapes. Whether capturing athletes pushing their limits or quiet moments of reflection in this dramatic terrain, Lars frames Romsdalen as both a challenge and an inspiration—a meeting point of endurance, creativity, and the raw power of nature.
"Shooting Kilian Jornet in Romsdalen was extraordinary because it felt like he wasn’t just running through the landscape—he was part of it. The way he moves, so fluidly and naturally, is like watching the mountains breathe. It’s rare to see someone so in tune with their surroundings."
II
Widely regarded as one of Norway’s most striking regions, Romsdalen is a paradise for adventurers and endurance athletes. The valley offers an unparalleled network of trails, from steep technical climbs that challenge even the strongest runners to gentler routes that wind through awe-inspiring landscapes. Iconic paths like the Romsdalseggen Ridge reward effort with sweeping panoramic views, making every ascent an unforgettable experience.
Romsdalen’s running community thrives in this epic terrain. It’s a place where athletes connect not just through a love of the outdoors, but through the shared determination born in its rugged challenges. From grueling ascents to summits like Store Vengetind to multi-day adventures and the rhythmic solitude of trail running, Romsdalen inspires runners to test their limits while immersing themselves in the valley’s boundless natural beauty.
“Even if you don’t want to beat any records, just experiencing this alpine environment is something special.
“the tougher, wetter and more stormy the days, the more this feeling gets exposed. Just moving through this terrain, feeling its scale and energy, is an experience in itself. Very humbling and sometimes truly epic."

For Lars, settling in Romsdalen wasn’t just about finding a beautiful place to live—it was about immersing himself in a culture where endurance, simplicity, and a deep respect for nature define daily life. Now, through his photography, he captures the raw beauty of this connection, sharing the stories of a place that continues to inspire him every day.
“There’s something about the way the mountains shape life here,” Lars says. “It’s not just about the landscape—it’s the culture around it. People in Norway don’t see the outdoors as separate from their daily lives. The mountains are part of who they are, part of how they connect with themselves and each other.”
"The light here is its own kind of magic. In Romsdalen, the colors shift constantly—one moment it’s cool blues and grays, and the next, the sky ignites with fiery reds and golds."
"Norra Serres runs with this effortless grace, even on terrain that would stop most people in their tracks. Watching her navigate Romsdalen’s trails is inspiring—it’s like she’s in constant conversation with the mountains."
IV
"For me, Romsdalen is one of those places that feels alive. The running scene here has this incredible energy—it’s not just about performance or records, though there’s plenty of that. It’s about this deep love for the trails and the mountains. You see it in the way people run, how they know every twist and turn of the terrain, and how they keep coming back to it, no matter the weather.
That’s what makes this place so special to me as a photographer. It’s not just the grandeur of the mountains—it’s the connection between people and the land. Whether it’s professionals pushing their limits or someone simply running for the love of it, Romsdalen has this way of stripping everything down to the essentials. It’s raw, it’s challenging, and it’s breathtakingly beautiful. And I feel lucky to call it home."
